About Project
With the support of Pope family members, Bedeque Area Historical Society, Bedeque & the Area Rural Municipality, PEI provincial government and the global Tamil community, the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) is committed to building a 10 feet monument for G.U. Pope at his birthplace – Bedeque, Prince Edward Island as part of the bicentenary birth celebration. CTC has leased the piece of land where the Pope family’s house was originally located and where G.U. Pope was born.
George Uglow Pope, popularly known as G.U. Pope, was born on the 24th of April 1820 in Bedeque, Prince Edward Island in Canada.
G.U. Pope started studying Tamil as a teenager in England, and in 1839, he went to South India
He later turned into a scholar of Tamil.
His most famous work is the English translation of the Thirukkural, completed in 1886. In 1881, Pope left India and settled in Oxford, England, where he made a mark as a lecturer in Tamil
G.U. Pope’s contributions to the Tamil language is extraordinary. He also translated Thiruvasagam and Naladiyar in English among many others.

About Anbudan Thamil Concert
Anbudan Thamil is a Tamil concert organized to support an important Tamil project that promotes Tamil language & culture worldwide. The first Anbudan Tamil Concert was held virtually in 2021, benefiting the Toronto Tamil Chair Project, and reached over several thousands of viewers worldwide. Abudan Thamil Concert in 2023 is being organized to support a Monument for an important Canadian born Tamil scholar George Uglow Pope in his birthplace Bedeque, PEI.

தமிழ் அறிஞரான ஜி.யு.போப்புக்கு, கனடாவின் பிறின்ஸ் எட்வேர்ட் தீவில் (Prince Edward Island -PEI) அமைந்துள்ள பெடெக் என்ற அவர் பிறந்த கிராமத்தில், நினைவுச்சின்னம் ஒன்றினை அமைக்கும் வரலாற்று முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த முயற்சிக்கு உறுதுணையாக, “அன்புடன் தமிழ் 2023” இசை நிகழ்வு நடைபெறுவதைத் தெரிவித்துக் கொள்வதில் மிக்க மகிழ்ச்சி அடைகிறோம்.
